Sample Art Lessons

Super Me! (Ages 7-9)

Using mixed media - color pencils, pastel, watercolor, magazines and construction paper - children think about their own strengths and what makes them a ‘super hero’ in normal daily life. Maybe they recycle, are kind to others, or love to read! Whatever strength they choose, children learn to value themselves through art-making, exploring an array of techniques in drawing, collaging and painting.

A version of this lesson is also available to teens, where ideas around identity are explored!

Celebrating Diversity! (Virtual - All Ages)

During a time of social distancing, the community of Hudson Valley came together digitally to celebrate the annual Multicultural Festival! Through this collaborative, virtual art project, children and adults were invited to explore fabric patterns & quilts from cultures around the world, and create their own cultural quilt square using found materials around the house! Participants could share their artwork on instagram, joining a digital quilt that can be viewed @CulturalQuiltHV. Check out quilts around the world here.

Art as Activism: Endangered.

Students explore World Wildlife Fund’s list of endangered species and complete a small research project on an animal of their choice and their habitat. We explore the reasons why they are going extinct and steps that even children can take to help the endangered species survive. Looking at animal artworks by artist activists Ingrid Mech, Judith McKay and Andy Warhol, children will create their own animal paintings to highlight the animal they want to help and bring attention to.
